Intel is reportedly cooking something big for next year as a
leaked slide deck reveals the company’s plans to bring octa-core processors to
the market before the end of the year 2014.
According to a report on VR-Zone,
Intel’s next-generation performance platform – Haswell-E is scheduled to make
its first appearance during the second half of 2014. The new platform will
feature 8-core processors with up to 20MB of L3 cache.
As with other chips from Intel, Haswell-E chips will sport
hyper threading technology with support up to a maximum of 16 logical cores.
Maximum TDP for the platform will be in the 130W to 140W range and the
processors will be built on 22nm 2nd generation Hi-k process. Intel
will also reportedly axe its current 4-core base model in favour of a 6-core or
8-core versions of the CPU.
Haswell-E will also come with a new version of the LGA 2011
socket – the LGA 2011-3. It has the same dimension and ball pattern pitch as
LGA 2011. Based on the slide deck, the design of the new socket is more efficient and helps improve package
handling.
In addition, the company will also launch its new Wellsburg
family of motherboard chips. The new chips will support up to six USB 3.0 port,
up to eight USB 2.0 ports, a maximum of ten SATA 6Gbps ports, support for
integrated clock and a TDP of 6.5W. But most importantly, the new chips will
support quad-channel DDR4 RAM clocked up to 2133MHz.
