A few days ago we’ve heard of reports that Samsung is
allegedly working on a virtual
reality headset that will compete against Oculus VR’s Rift and Sony’s
Project Morpheus. Well, it turns out Samsung won’t be competing with Oculus VR
but instead will have a partnership with the company for its own VR product.
According to reports, Samsung will be the one to build the
hardware for the virtual reality headset while Oculus VR will be in charge of
the device’s software. In exchange, Samsung will provide Oculus with its latest
OLED screens which will be used to make future versions of the Oculus Rift.
However, unlike the Rift and Project Morpheus, the Samsung
VR headset will employ a different technique to give the VR experience to
consumers. Instead of using small screens placed on the head unit, the headset
will use the phone will be strapped into the headset and it will use the phone’s
display to project images to users’ eyes.
The headset will reportedly allow consumers to use the rear
camera to show a video feed of the outside world to a user’s eyes. This should
make the headset easier to use in real time and so you don’t go bumping into
things when you’re using the device.
Apparently a number of developers are already working on the
headset using Galaxy S4 handsets, but it’s likely that the headset will work
with future models – most likely the successor of the Galaxy S5.
