Sammy has just upped the ante when it comes to wearable tech
as it announces the new Gear S smartwatch.
The watch will be powered by the company’s own homebrewed
operating system, Tizen and will have a 2.0-inch curved AMOLED display with a
display resolution of 480x480 pixels. The dual-core processor is clocked at
1GHz and there’s 4GB of built-in storage as well as 512MB of RAM.
Just like the previous Gear models, the Gear S tries to do a
bit more than the competition. For instance, the watch comes with 3G
connectivity allowing the device to make phone calls and send text messages on
its own (although you need a special accessory to do this). There’s also Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth 4.1, a built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, a heart rate
monitor, ambient light and UV sensors and a barometer.
The Gear S is also IP67 certified and a 300mAh battery
(which according to Samsung will last up to 2 days of typical use). Again,
there’s no word on pricing and availability yet but we’ll probably see more
details about those in the coming weeks.
